What is Gynecomastia Surgery?

Gynecomastia surgery—commonly referred to as male breast reduction—removes excess breast tissue and fat to create a flatter, more masculine chest. This condition is more common than many think and often stems from hormonal imbalance, medication side effects, or genetics. At our Austin Gynecomastia center, Dr. Reid performs this surgery using a combination of liposuction and direct gland excision for optimal results. If your case allows, he will also discuss male breast reduction without surgery as an option.

See Why Patients Trust Dr. Reid

Cannot say enough good things about my experience with every level of the Restora team! Meeting Doctor Reid was serendipitous and life-changing! From pre-op questions with Roxy and reception staff, to appointments with Doctor Reid and Kendra RN, to the day of the procedure with an extremely empathetic anesthesiologist Doctor Jajosky, everything was non-judgemental, positive, reassuring (to my anxious soul). The rapid recovery protocol had me feeling nearly 100% back to normal only a week post-op. I am looking forward to my future now more than ever with actual confidence in my appearance. Thank you Restora, Roxy, Kendra, Katelyn, Angela, Dr Jajosky and Dr Reid!

I can’t think of enough kind words to say about this place. Dr. Reid is truly SO amazing, I would do it all over again in a heartbeat. During the initial consult Dr. Reid showed approximate photos of what the end result would be, and my real end result somehow surpassed those images and is better than I could ever imagine. He makes sure your comfortable and on the same page throughout the whole process, and is truly a master at his craft. The whole staff from start to finish (Dr. Reid, Blaire, roxy, heather, Lauren) were truly outstanding. I am SO so thankful I found Dr. Reid at Restora!!!!

Gynecomastia Surgery: Frequently Asked Questions

1

Can I have Gynecomastia surgery if I live out of town or out of the country?

Yes! Restora Austin is recognized as a center of excellence for chest contouring, and Dr. Reid frequently treats patients from across the U.S. and internationally. We offer virtual consultations via email, FaceTime, or Zoom. Patients typically send photos and personal details, which Dr. Reid reviews to create a tailored treatment plan.

Once finalized, surgery can be scheduled, and Dr. Reid will meet with you in person the day before surgery to confirm all details. Our Inspire Surgery Centre offers overnight accommodations, and we’re happy to assist with different levels of recovery care if needed. From start to finish, our goal is to deliver an exceptional, seamless experience—no matter where you're traveling from.

2

How long does it take to see the final results after Gynecomastia surgery?

You’ll notice an immediate change in your chest shape after surgery, but your final results will take time to fully develop. Swelling is common and can take several weeks to begin resolving, with most of it subsiding by the three-month mark. In some patients—especially those with reduced skin elasticity—skin creases or looseness may take 6 to 12 months to improve as the tissue naturally contracts and heals.

It's also normal for the areola to shrink in diameter after significant gland removal, which enhances your overall result. Be patient with the process—your outcome will continue to refine over several months and is considered permanent if your weight and hormones remain stable.

3

How long do the results of Gynecomastia surgery last?

The results of Gynecomastia surgery are typically permanent, especially when your weight and hormone levels remain stable. Once the excess glandular tissue is surgically removed, it does not grow back.

However, if your Gynecomastia was caused by medications, steroids, or hormone imbalances, recurrence is possible if those triggers return. Dr. Reid will work with you to identify any contributing factors so you can maintain your results long-term. With healthy lifestyle habits and proper care, most patients enjoy a lasting, confident outcome.

4

Will I have scars after Gynecomastia surgery, and what will they look like?

Scarring after Gynecomastia surgery varies based on your anatomy and the surgical technique used. If your case involves mostly fatty tissue and minimal gland removal, the scars are often very small and placed inconspicuously. When glandular tissue is removed from behind the areola, a subtle incision is made along the lower edge of the areola.

In some cases, especially when skin tightening or areola reduction is needed—an incision may go around the full areola or along the chest crease. Dr. Reid will discuss incision placement during your consultation and teach you how to care for your scars to optimize healing. For scars that are slower to fade, we offer effective treatments like Laser Scar Therapy.

5

Are there any risks involved with Gynecomastia surgery?

Like any surgical procedure, male breast reduction carries certain risks. These may include bleeding, infection, fluid accumulation, changes in skin or nipple sensation, contour irregularities, or less favorable scarring.

However, serious complications are rare, especially when your surgery is performed by an experienced board-certified plastic surgeon like Dr. Reid. He uses advanced techniques to minimize risk and enhance safety. Additionally, drains are not typically required for Gynecomastia surgery, making recovery more comfortable for most patients.

6

Am I a good candidate for Gynecomastia surgery?

Most men with Gynecomastia are candidates for male breast reduction, but ideal candidates are near their target weight and in overall good health. If you're significantly overweight, Dr. Reid may recommend weight loss before surgery, especially if your breast fullness is due to excess fat rather than glandular tissue.

In some cases, weight loss alone can reduce the appearance of Gynecomastia without surgery. However, losing a substantial amount of weight after surgery may cause loose skin, which could require additional procedures. During your consultation, Dr. Reid will assess your anatomy and goals to determine if surgery is right for you.

7

What is the recovery process like after Gynecomastia surgery?

Recovery after Gynecomastia surgery is typically smooth and well-tolerated, but it can vary depending on the extent of your procedure. Most men experience some swelling, bruising, and mild discomfort, which can be managed easily with prescribed medication.

You'll be asked to wear a compression garment for several weeks to support healing and reduce fluid buildup. While many patients return to work and light activities within a week, strenuous exercise and heavy lifting should be avoided for about four weeks. Dr. Reid and his team will guide you through every step of your recovery to ensure the best outcome.

8

When can I return to work and exercise after Gynecomastia surgery?

Most men who undergo Gynecomastia surgery with a combination of SAFELipo® or VASER liposuction and gland excision typically take about a week off work to rest and heal. While recovery is generally well tolerated, it’s important to avoid strenuous activity or vigorous exercise during the initial healing phase.

Light cardio can usually be resumed around the two-week mark, depending on how well you're healing. By four weeks, most patients are cleared to return to their full workout routines, including weight training and swimming. Following Dr. Reid’s post-op guidelines closely will ensure a safe recovery and the best long-term results.

9

Where will my Gynecomastia surgery take place, and who will oversee my anesthesia?

Your Gynecomastia surgery will be performed at INSPIRE Surgery Centre, a fully accredited facility located directly adjacent to Restora Austin for added convenience and privacy. Dr. Reid prioritizes safety and excellence, and INSPIRE meets the highest standards set by the American Association for Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgery Facilities (AAAASF).

A board-certified anesthesiologist from Capitol Anesthesiology Association—not a nurse or CRNA—will administer your anesthesia and stay with you throughout the entire procedure and recovery. This hospital-level care ensures the highest safety standards and optimal comfort. For patients who desire it, we also offer a beautiful overnight suite with dedicated care following your surgery.

10

Are there different grades or levels of Gynecomastia severity?

Yes, Gynecomastia is classified into four grades based on how much tissue is present and how it affects the shape of the chest.

Grade I involves a small amount of excess tissue confined beneath the areola.

Grade II includes moderate tissue that extends beyond the areola, but still blends into the chest with minimal skin excess.

Grade III is more pronounced, with visible breast tissue distinct from the chest and moderate excess skin.

Grade IV is the most severe form, resulting in a very feminine-looking chest with significant excess tissue and skin that may extend toward the armpits or back.Dr. Reid will assess your condition during your consultation to determine your grade and recommend the best treatment approach.
